Our Story

West’s Bakery is a family bakery. It goes back to 1950, when George West, Sr. took what he learned at the Mohegan Bakery in Westerly, and opened his own shop in Hope Valley. In the coming years, he turned it into a flourishing business enterprise.

In a Westerly Sun article from the mid-1980’s it said, “George was busy seven days a week in his bakery-restaurant and says business is very good.” The article comically adds ”He does get a day off during the winter.” It was this committed passion and work ethic, and strong family values that turned West’s Bakery into a Hope Valley institution over the years.

The baked goods are fresh and impeccably crafted, the food is delicious, and the local atmosphere and conversations are lively. Eventually, George’s son, George ‘Bud’ West, Jr. started to fill in as a baker when his dad was out; until taking over most of the baking duties in the 90’s. Day in and day out, Bud brings that same level of perfection to all of the bakery items, including the world famous bismark, a truly wondrous delicacy that has achieved a sort of cult status across New England….and holds a special place in the hearts of Hope Valley transplants worldwide.
